Camp for Latinos with talent in performing arts

Hundreds of young people with Latin roots between the ages of 7 and 17 are taking part in a unique experience, a summer camp focused on the performing arts.

The non-profit organization, R.evolución Latina seeks to nurture emerging talent through bilingual singing, acting and dancing sessions through the Dare to Go Beyond program.

The mentor of the R.evolución Latina organization, Luis Salgado, tells the experience of the project

“We have been on this mission for 17 years and we have seen the change since we started, not only in our youth, but also in the Latino representation within the Broadway industry, within the film industry.”

For a week, children from all five boroughs are immersed in an empowering experience through the arts.

One of the many teenagers seeking success on the stage is Hikari Salgado-Ambert, who is participating in the program Dare to Go Beyond

“I like dancing, acting and singing. Being on Broadway,” says Hikari with great motivation.

Salgado, who is a choreographer of Puerto Rican descent and has had an extensive career on Broadway, in film, and television, says it is important to be able to give back what he once received. He tells of his experience of coming from a public school, where art, he says, changed his life.

“So when I came to do my first show on Broadway, which was In the Heights, we saw very clearly the importance and the need to continue creating spaces of representation where these young people see themselves in us and feel empowered to value their name, their culture and the fact that as artists or within the arts we can have a space in the world,” said Salgado.

This summer, they celebrate a crossover with Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the critically acclaimed musical that has won 10 Tony Awards and is celebrating its fifth anniversary on Broadway.

The group will be joined by Venezuelan actor Andrés Quintero, who recently joined the cast of the musical and who will also impart his knowledge with singing lessons.

Another participant in the program who wanted to give his testimony is Sebastián Ontiveros.

“What I enjoy most is the connection we all have together, we bond a lot and we have this connection that is very nice and it is great to have all this,” said Ontiveros.

The idea is to inspire these young people to pursue their dreams, providing them with an unforgettable experience that could mark the beginning of promising careers in the world of theatre and entertainment.
