'Consuelo'.

Although sex toys seem to be on the rise today, they have existed for quite some time, as confirmed by the series “Consuelo” in which the bed secrets of the ladies of Mexico in the 1950s are revealed.

There are records of these objects in ancient Greece, imperial China and even the Paleolithic.

It is not surprising that women in the mid-20th century received a version that took advantage of the technology available to make them vibrate.

But then Mexico was an apparently very conservative country and even mentioning them was a scandal. Consuelo, the protagonist of the series played by the Mexican actress Cassandra Sánchez-Navarro, does not meet them until her husband abandons her with her three children and she, thanks to her sister-in-law played by the Mexican actress Verónica Bravo, turns to those she knows as well. as “comforters.” In her case, it is not for her sexual pleasure (well, a little yes), but to make business by selling it to the women around her.

“Consuelo is a woman who gets ahead,” Sánchez-Navarro said in a video call interview from Mexico City regarding its premiere Friday on the ViX streaming service. “I’m not a mother yet, but I can imagine that the day I have a child, I will sell a kidney if necessary for that child to eat and have a good life.”

For Sánchez-Navarro, actress of series such as “The Game of Keys” and “Sense8”, it was her first opportunity filming a production set in the 1950s.

“I loved it because every day it reminded me how lucky women are to not live in that world,” she said about this contrast with the conservative society of that time.

Her children, played by Alexander Ventosa, Sofía Monarrez and Camila Núñez, turned out to be another of the best experiences of playing a character so different from her.

“It was beautiful because those kids we worked with were so special,” she said. “It was very cool that I started motherhood with them.”

In addition, she had an entire wardrobe of dresses with full skirts and crinolines, corsets, hats and gloves.

“I am a very feminine woman and I loved feeling so beautiful, so pretty,” she said.

When her husband abandons her, Consuelo tries to keep up appearances, continuing to go to the club with her friends, society ladies led by Olga, played by Catherine Siachoque.

“It is so important in the story for these women, because it was the model that everyone in the community wanted to follow,” said the Colombian actress about her character.

Olga is the wife of a deputy, president of the good manners committee, knows how to cook and how to dress for every occasion, but she is also an “old-fashioned” woman for her own time.

“She wasn’t like she was in the 50s, but like she was in the 40s, rigorous, covered up,” said Siachoque, star of series like “Dark Desire,” “The House Next Door” and “Without Breasts There Is No Paradise.”

As Consuelo advances in her business, Olga inevitably becomes an opposing force. The actresses did not want to reveal more details about how their lives intersect. What they did share was the meticulousness with which they both prepared themselves even when going out on any assignment, with makeup, hair, jewelry and headdresses.

“It was difficult for these women to be beautiful; it was a job, to be good wives and beautiful,” Siachoque said.

“And perfect,” added Sánchez-Navarro, who pointed out that so they wouldn’t go crazy trying there were “dildos in different colors.”
