Camps for minors prepared for heart attacks

Youth sports programs and camps will now be required to provide equipment and plans to address the possibility of cardiac arrest occurring.

This is according to a new law signed into law by Governor Hochul yesterday.

The measure requires camps and youth sports programs to have an automated external defibrillator on site. They must also have a person trained to deal with cardiac arrest cases at all games, camps and sports practices.

The law indicates that programs with five teams or more must comply with this new measure.

The bill received support from Buffalo Bills defenseman Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest on the field against the Cincinnati Bengals.

More than seven thousand children experience a cardiac arrest emergency each year.
