Canada and the US expand the Safe Mobility program for migrants

MIAMI.- The Canadian Government launched a new humanitarian route to grant permanent residence to 11,000 foreigners from Haiti, Venezuela and Colombia with family ties in Canada. Beneficiaries must reside in their respective countries.

As a complement to this immigration initiative, the Government of Canada offers various alternatives for permanent and temporary immigration to that country. The objective of immigration is to strengthen the economy, reunite families and help refugees, points out on the Portal of Safe Mobility.

With the change, the Safe Mobility Canada program is directed in two ways: Through requests that can be made by people of certain nationalities who are outside their countries, in whose selection, individuals or family groups can be reassigned to Canada. And now, with the new modality that allows citizens of Haiti, Venezuela and Colombia manage the immigration process from your country. That is, the applicant must reside in the country of origin to be able to receive the benefit of obtaining permanent residence.

This alternative seeks to ensure that these people do not have to migrate irregularly and travel through dangerous crossings to reach North America.

Spain also participates in the Safe Mobility program created by the United States, but to date has not announced a direct option like this, but continues to receive migrants who have been selected, after reviewing the requests, within the framework of the immigration program. which operates through the offices it opened in Costa Rica, Colombia and Guatemala.

Requirements for Residency in Canada

  • Be a citizen of Colombia, Haiti or Venezuela
  • Residing in Central or South America, the Caribbean or Mexico, and being outside the United States and Canada.
  • Be a spouse, common-law partner, child (of any age), grandchild, parent, grandparent or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who signs a legal declaration of support for one year.

Safe Mobility includes Ecuadorians

Likewise, the United States and Costa Rica reached an agreement to expand the Safe Mobility initiative that now includes Ecuadorians. who are in the Central American nation before June 12, 2023.

In the case of Costa Rica, only Venezuelans and Nicaraguans present in that territory in the indicated period could apply to the Safe Mobility Program, but after negotiations it was possible to incorporate Ecuadorians for this benefit.

Safe Mobility is open for:

  1. People of Cuban, Haitian and Venezuelan nationality who were present in the territory of Colombia on or before June 11, 2023.
  2. People of Nicaraguan, Venezuelan and now Ecuadorian nationality who were present in the territory of Costa Rica on or before June 12, 2023.
  3. The Safe Mobility program in Guatemala only for people of Guatemalan nationality.

If a person wants to apply for the Safe Mobility supplement with Canada, because they meet the requirements, they must return to their country of origin from where they must make the request.
