Canon is expanding its portfolio of mirrorless cameras with the EOS R8 and EOS R50, new models that will cater to different usage profiles with high image quality and advanced native features for vloggers, enthusiasts and professionals.
Canon EOS R8
Designed with a focus on content creators looking for high quality without shelling out exorbitant prices for the R6 Mark II, the EOS R8 features the same 24.2 MP CMOS sensor capable of recording video at up to 4K @ 60 FPS, as well as slow motion in Full HD. The model features Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for fast focusing in just 0.03 seconds.
The camera eliminates the need for a lens with built-in stabilization, as it offers five-axis residual motion correction via Canon’s Movie Digital IS technology. The EOS R8 retains support for YCbCr 10-bit 4:2:2 format video for wide dynamic range, as well as HDR PQ Video and Canon Log 3.
Thanks to the DIGIC X processor, the machine is capable of delivering object detection, agile face recognition and great performance in night captures. Its light sensitivity is highlighted with EV -6.5 and ISO 102,400. All captures can be followed through its 3-inch touchscreen.
Other features for cinematography include markers on display during video capture, correction of oscillations in the focus distance and support for USB Video Class and USB Audio Class (UVC and UAC), ensuring more fluid communication with external devices, and can be used as a a webcam for live broadcasts.

Weighing just 461 grams, the EOS R8 is described by Canon as an “ideal content creation tool for budding photographers and videographers who need something powerful yet portable and scalable”.
Canon EOS R50
Even lighter, the EOS R50 weighs only 375 grams and boasts the same ability to record videos in up to 4K with its 24.2 MP APS-C sensor, but with a maximum of 30 FPS and a 10-bit color profile in HDR. This model is ideal for videos intended for social networks thanks to its IPB compression method (Full HD, 30p with a rate of 12 Mbps).
Like the EOS R8, the entry-level “R” series model captures incredibly fast for its compact size to capture up to 15 frames per second with its electronic shutter or 12 frames per second with the mechanical shutter. Designed for simpler applications, its sensitivity to light is lower, but still has an ISO of up to 32,000.
price and availability
Canon claims that its new cameras will launch in the third quarter of 2023. The EOS R8 will have an MSRP of $1,499 (about R$7,779), and can be purchased in a kit with the new RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens for US$1,699 (about R$8,814).
The EOS R50, in turn, will hit the market with a suggested price of US$ 679 (about R$ 3,520). You will be able to purchase the camera in a kit with the RF-S 18-45mm lens or a set with the RF-S 18-45mm and the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM for $799 and $1,029 ( around BRL 4,144 and BRL 5,338), respectively.
