The Mini brand, which belongs to BMW, got into trouble in China due to a scandal not about cars, but about ice cream. At the auto show in Shanghai, Mini distributed free ice cream at its stand – but because a Chinese man was denied it, the company faces accusations of discrimination.

Mini then released an apology yesterday. It said that “careless management and carelessness of the workforce” had caused “inconvenience to everyone.” As a consequence, the training of employees should be improved.

A video published on the Chinese online platform Weibo showed that a foreigner was apparently given the free ice cream – after the Chinese had previously been denied it. This had apparently been told that the ice had run out.
