When iOS 16 was presented in summer 2022, Apple also announced a completely revised version of its CarPlay vehicle integration. It is scheduled to be launched this year – probably in autumn or winter rather than summer – and will bring a number of exciting functions with it. The problem: It is still unclear who from the car manufacturer community will be involved in “CarPlay 2.0”, as the project is often called. The reason: Apple will in future require much closer integration into the vehicle than before.

This is already shown by the first screenshots that Apple published last year. CarPlay no longer appears as an option “under further running”, but occupies almost the entire user interface of the vehicle. This, in turn, contradicts the philosophy of many large car companies, which see this software as a key feature to set themselves apart from the competition.

Although Apple has now succeeded in in countless brands of vehicles – often together with Android Audio – to land. However, usage is limited to the main screen of the entertainment system and – more rarely – to a small area on the dashboard. Companies like Tesla, who consider software to be extremely important, as mentioned above, do not even allow CarPlay with on-board resources. Apple has not yet named official participants for “CarPlay 2.0”. More details will be revealed later this year.

Apple has already announced some of the new features. CarPlay should be able to provide content for multiple screens in the vehicle and thus create “a uniform and consistent experience”. “By integrating deeper into the vehicle, users can do things like control the radio or change the climate control right from CarPlay. Using the vehicle’s data, CarPlay will seamlessly display speed, fuel level, temperature and more on the instrument cluster.” The Group.

However, there should be an approach to personalization, which vehicle manufacturers could also deliver. This includes different instrument and gauge designs, special widgets and more. Apparently there are first interested parties in the industry 9to5mac heard about first commitments have. Supposedly Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Renault, Land Rover, Porsche and Ford are among them. How much they use the possibilities of CarPlay 2.0 is still unclear.
