Mexico City.- Modern Pharmaceuticals is expanding its efforts to offer cancer-fighting RNA messenger vaccines by the end of the decade, said Paul Burton, the company’s medical director.

“We have this vaccine and it will be highly effective, and it will save many thousands, if not millions of lives. I believe we can offer personalized cancer vaccines against multiple types of tumors to people around the world”, he expressed in an interview published today a few days by The Guardian.

Just in the past, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA, for its acronym in English) gave the designation of “innovative therapy” to Moderna’s personalized vaccine, following results of recent trials in patients with skin cancer melanoma.

On the other hand, the Mexican infectologist Alejandro Macías indicated that if biological development is a breakthrough, it must be taken into account that cancer is a disease with several subtypes that affect different organs and that has different pathophysiological origins.

“There is a vaccine that the FDA in the United States has designated as innovative for a specific cancer that is melanoma and that is about personalizing for each patient”, he explained.

Likewise, I considered that in a very near future there could be vaccines against different types of cancer.

“Initially there will be vaccines that will be designed for each patient according to their tumor”, said Macías.

“We could say that more than a vaccine could be an immunotherapy, because on the one hand it is a drug that increases the capacity of the immune system and on the other hand the messenger RNA vaccine is designed to form a specific immunity against this cancer”.
