Following up with its announcements for CES 2023, Lenovo has updated two of the most advanced devices in the Legion gaming family. While maintaining the design of the predecessors, the new Legion Pro 7 and 7i laptops bring important improvements in areas such as power, cooling and construction, while adopting the first-time chips from AMD, Intel and Nvidia. Meanwhile, the Tower 7i desktop has been revamped, and updated for the new generations of Intel CPUs and Nvidia graphics cards.

Legion Pro 7 gets new CPUs and GPUs

One of the brand’s most powerful gamer notebook models, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7 and Pro 7i arrive in their 2023 versions without major visual changes, maintaining what was seen in the previous generation.

There are, however, some improvements, such as construction with recycled metal to reduce impacts on the environment. The biggest changes are internal, with the arrival of AMD Ryzen 7000 Dragon Range CPUs in the Pro 7 and 13th Gen Intel Raptor Lake-HX in the Pro 7i.

Both lines have as a differential the use of hardware from the red and blue team’s desktop processors — basically, solutions like the Ryzen 9 7900X and the Core i9 13900 are repackaged in a format that can be soldered to notebooks.

In practice, these chips promise to offer an extreme level of performance, almost identical to that of desktops, in addition to benefiting laptops with a wider range of connections.

In addition, the Legion Pro 7 series ships with the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 mobile GPUs and an Artificial Intelligence co-processor, which uses some advanced algorithms to assess the stress that each game puts on the processing set, optimizing various characteristics to provide the best performance.

Cooling is one of the focuses, aiming to make possible the use of the maximum consumption available for CPU and GPU without any throttling with an improved version that takes better advantage of the bulge in the rear, without leaving aside the robust connections installed in this area, which include the port charging (an impressive 330W), USB-A, HDMI and Ethernet ports.

An interesting point is that the rear USB-C port supports charging, a feature that starts to reach gamer notebooks only this year.

In the case of Legion Pro 7, the novelty has a catch: it is necessary to set the device to hybrid mode, in which the dedicated GPU is disabled, and only the integrated graphics are enabled. It is possible that the measure is a necessity given the low amount of energy supplied – at least compared to the official charging connector.

Lenovo’s traditional keyboard is back, including per-key configurable RGB backlighting (and on the LED front bar) via Lenovo Spectrum, the company’s integrated solution in Vantage general management software. The lighting system takes advantage of per-key operation to facilitate the activation of shortcuts, lighting only the function keys and any shortcuts defined by the user.

The screens, in a 16:10 ratio, reach 240 Hz options, a huge upgrade compared to the 165 Hz limit of the previous generation, and can have the refresh rate changed at any time using the FN + R shortcut, to preserve battery life — the giant did not detail whether, when taking the device out of the socket, the automatic switch can be configured as in competing notebooks.

Regardless, autonomy under ideal conditions should not be a problem, considering the 99.99 Wh tank, one of the largest on the market and the legally possible limit number for a device to be used in airplanes.

The new Legion Pro 7 and Pro 7i have not yet had price and availability details revealed, but news should be released in the coming months.

Legion Tower 7i brings new look and Raptor Lake CPUs

One of Lenovo’s most robust desktops, the Legion Tower 7i 2023 debuts with the same size of 34 liters as the previous generation, but now in a completely renewed look, which improves the air flow in the front grille and at the top, equipped with a larger number perforations and space to install more fans.

Taking advantage of the available space, the giant also provides motherboards in ATX format, providing as many connections and expansion ports as possible.

Bringing a renewed look that improves airflow, the Lenovo Legion Tower 7i 2023 features configurations with 13th generation Intel Raptor Lake-K processors and Nvidia GPUs up to the RTX 4090 (Image: Lenovo)

At least in the US, all configurations released will bring by default three front fans to draw in cold air and a rear fan for exhaustion, as well as the option to use liquid cooling, 13th generation Intel Raptor Lake-K CPUs with overclocking support, GPUs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 up to the RTX 4090 and an all-new 1,200 W power supply, complementing the base 850 W version — both fully modular for easy cable management.

Another interesting novelty for RGB lighting enthusiasts is the addition of a button on the back to quickly change light profiles, eliminating the need to access the brand’s software to reconfigure it.

As with notebooks, more specific details of the configurations, including connectivity, as well as prices and availability terms, should be announced in the coming months.
