Chanel confirms that Virginie Viard will not continue as artistic director

PARS.- The haute couture house Chanel announced on Thursday the departure of his director artistic, Virginie Viard, without designating an immediate successor.

“Chanel confirms the departure of Virginie Viard after a rich five-year collaboration as artistic director of fashion collections,” the group said in a statement.

“A new creative organization for the house will be announced in due course. The fall-winter 2024-2025 haute couture collection will be presented as planned on June 25 at the Opera Garnier,” he added.

Virginie Viard, 62, had assumed this extremely prestigious and demanding position in 2019, following the death of the legendary creator Karl Lagerfeld. I had previously worked at his side for more than 20 years. “Chanel thanks Virginie Viard for her remarkable contribution, her creativity and her vitality,” the group wrote.

His time at Chanel

During his five years creating Chanel collections, the house’s sales reached record levels, with nearly $20 billion in 2023, an “exceptional new year” according to the firm, with an increase of 14.6%.

His work, both in ready-to-wear and haute couture, however, was criticized in the fashion world for its sometimes uncertain design or a lack of risk-taking.

One of his most appreciated collections was that of March, on the theme of the Norman seaside resort of Deauville.

The French creator, always dressed simply, in a T-shirt and black pants, was extremely discreet in the press and sober in her interventions, contrasting with the flamboyant character of her mentor.

“A new chapter opens for Chanel Mode. We are confident in the teams’ ability to ensure the continuity of the collections in this transition period,” the group stated.
