Messi will miss an undetermined number of matches with Inter Miami after injuring a ligament in his right ankle during the Copa America final, the club announced.
In a statement, the team provided an update from Baptist Health Medical Center.
“Following a medical assessment, it has been determined that Leo Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle,” the statement said. “The captain’s availability will be determined by regular assessments and the progress of his recovery.”
Earlier, Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said he was awaiting the tests carried out on his Argentine compatriot.
“Well, he had a sprain, yes, obviously the injury is there and now we have to do tests and wait for the results. We are always informed through our physiotherapist, but he is also very cautious in making a final diagnosis until we have the tests,” said Martino, who did not want to speculate on whether it would be a long-term injury.
