Children raise their voices in Paraguay against sexual violence

Dozens of children and adolescents marched in the streets of Asunción against child sexual violence, a crime that in Paraguay counted more than a thousand complaints from last January to April, which gives an average of 8 victims per day.

Children of all ages commemorated the National Day against Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of children and adolescents, which remembers the girl Felícita Estigarribiaan 11-year-old tangerine seller, who was found dead and with signs of sexual abuse on May 31, 2004.

This fact remained unpunished.

To prevent these crimes, activists ask to implement some state policies.

“To punish the abusers we are finally arriving late, so we need to arrive on time and arriving on time means educating. Educating to prevent and for this comprehensive sexuality education is important as a public policy, which is a right that has been denied for a long time. a lot of time”.

The activist added that many minors do not report it because “generally the acts of sexual violence occur within families.”

According to data from the Paraguayan Supreme Court of Justice, between 2019 and 2023 a total of 886 people were convicted of sexual abuse of minors, only 22% of the cases initiated.
