Gladbeck’s Mayor Bettina Weist looks back with mixed feelings. In her Christmas greeting, she praises the solidarity in the city.

With mixed feelings, but with hope and confidence, Mayor Bettina Weist looks back on the year that is now coming to an end, which was still marked by the omnipresent crises – corona pandemic, refugee management, energy crisis.

In her Christmas and New Year’s message, the mayor emphasizes that the city tour is facing up to the challenges primarily thanks to the intensive work of three crisis management teams. With the new “Staff for Extraordinary Events” one is particularly prepared to be able to cope with possible serious consequences of the energy crisis, such as longer power outages or a lack of gas. Weist praises the great helpfulness of the entire city society – “we can all be very proud of that”.

Gladbeck’s mayor calls for “adequate funding from the municipalities

The mayor points out the city’s acute financial situation and describes the approval of the city budget for 2023 as a “special feat of strength”. This is only possible because the financial burdens from the three crises can be “isolated”. However, she calls for “adequate financing” of the municipality and a solution to the old debt issue.

The mayor points out that attempts are still being made to “shape the future of the city” and cites the school and day-care center expansion program, the replacement for the burnt-down sports hall in Rentfort-Nord and the realignment of the Wiesenbusch innovation center as examples. Weist praised the development of the major projects for the local supply center in Schwechater Straße, the expansion of the A 52 and the Mottbruch sports park, which are “getting on the move”.

Also in 2023, the mayor relies on the “strong cohesion in Gladbeck

The problem property at Steinstraße 72 remains a particular challenge. But people are also staying active in other places, such as the skate park or the area around Goethe-/Humboldtstraße. “We have to take the fears and worries of Gladbeckers very seriously,” said Weist, who is also counting on the “strong cohesion in Gladbeck” in 2023.
