Geoffrey Hinton, considered the ‘Godfather of Artificial Intelligence’ and who recently left Google, gave an interview to Reuters where he warns that AI could pose a more urgent danger than climate change.

“I wouldn’t want to downplay climate change. I wouldn’t say you shouldn’t worry about it. It’s also a big risk. But I think (AI) could become more urgent.”notes Hinton.

The expert notes that, with climate change “it is very easy to recommend what to do” and that, in that case, “eventually things will be alright”. However, the same does not happen in the case of Artificial Intelligence.

Hinton also points to his role in AI development, calling into question whether it will be too much of a part to control the development of this technology.

I console myself with the usual excuse: If I hadn’t done it, someone else would have. It’s hard to see how we can prevent bad agents from doing bad things.”said Hinton.
