The EU states want to ban general green advertising promises such as “environmentally friendly” and “climate neutral” in many cases. The Swedish EU Council Presidency announced today that manufacturers would then no longer be allowed to use such terms to advertise products, processes or companies. Unless the claims could be substantiated by a publicly available certification scheme.

So that consumers can better compare presumably environmentally friendly products, only slogans based on official certification regulations should be allowed in the future. Sustainability marks that are officially registered or defined by public authorities are also allowed.

The Chairwoman of the Internal Market Committee of the EU Parliament, Anna Cavazzini from the German Greens, welcomed the unification of the EU states in principle. Next week the European Parliament will decide its position and then negotiate a compromise with the EU countries.
