Algerians carry coffee in their hearts, it’s a fact. We consume significant quantities of this substance with invigorating powers every year. All social castes and age categories are concerned; there are no prerequisites to enjoy coffee in Algeria.
The latest report from theICO (International Coffee Organisation) corroborates these facts. The study revealed the ranking of the countries in the world that consume the most coffeeand we take pride of place on the podium of caffeine-addicted Africans.
Algeria in the top 3 of Africa in coffee consumption: predictable results?
Our love for coffee as a people is such that it is consumed on all occasions. At breakfast to fill up on energy, to get through a hearty midday meal, or with a touch of milk to “tighten up your head” at the end of the afternoon. All excuses are good to bail out the caffeine gauges in Algeria, and it shows in the figures of global studies.

The Coffee Report & Outlooklatest report datedICO (avril 2023)also reports on the production and consumption of coffee around the world. On the African continent, we are classified 2ᵉ biggest consumers of coffee after Ethiopia. Closely followed by Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia. This top 6 alone accounts for 74% of total coffee consumption in Africa.
Declining coffee consumption for Algeria
Even if our country is enthroned in Africa, the fact remains that our consumption experienced a slight decrease last year. Indeed, figures from the same study indicate that it has decreased by 14.2% during the 2021/2022 season.

The analysis of theICO calls into question the inflation that the Algerian economy has been experiencing since this same period “Since the middle of 2021, inflation is high in Algeriadriven primarily by its food component.
