Berlin.
Defense Minister Lambrecht apparently wants to resign. The Bundeswehr now urgently needs leadership that it trusts.

That Federal Ministry of Defence is the ejection seat in the government jet. Many incumbents have felt that. Now Christine Lambrecht (SPD) is apparently pulling the exit lever herself. She has noticed that it is not enough for the Chancellor to stand by her. Because nobody – apart from Olaf Scholz – is satisfied with their performance. And that’s no wonder.

The list of their failures is impressive given the shortness of their tenure and it’s by Christina Lambrecht consistent when she now ends the tragedy herself. Those who don’t want to learn their soldiers’ rank insignia, those who celebrate 5,000 helmets as support for an invaded country, those who let their son post vain pictures from the government helicopter, those who overslept procuring ammunition for the Bundeswehr and a wild New Year’s firecracker as the background for a solidarity address to Ukraine chooses, he has no place at the head of the Federal Ministry of Defense.

Appointing Lambrecht as Secretary of Defense was Scholz’s mistake

Olaf Scholz made a mistake in giving Lambrecht this office at all. Everyone in Berlin knew that she didn’t want to go there and that, as a lawyer, she was a good fit for the job Interior Ministry would have been. The next appointment must now absolutely sit.

A war is raging in Europe and the Bundeswehr needs a leadership that enjoys the highest level of trust in the government, in the public and above all among the soldiers. Political proportional representation should no longer play a role. Whether man or woman, Seeheimer or party leftist, Friesian or Bavarian – now the best has to go. A second mistake would be dangerous not only for our security but also for the chancellor.
