The family minister advocates the deletion of paragraph 218. Our author agrees that abortion should be allowed.
No woman, that much is clear, will let you abortion take it easy on yourself. Nevertheless, some opponents of abortion like to give the impression. They stand in front of gynecologists who do abortions and show pictures of dead fetuses as a deterrent. As if such a picture could prevent an unintentionally pregnant woman from having an abortion. Instruction and threats are the worst thing to do for women in this situation.
A woman should have the right to terminate a pregnancy if she – and only she – wants to. It should be so. In Germany, however, abortion is still a general rule under penalty: You can read about it under Section 218 of the Criminal Code. Only if the pregnant woman meets certain conditions does she remain unpunished: on the one hand, she must seek advice beforehand and no more than twelve weeks may have elapsed between fertilization and the termination. But with this anchoring in the penal code, abortion is stigmatized. Even if the twelve-week period and prior consultation should remain in future.

If nowt Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus advocates for abortion to be allowed, that’s only right. This strengthens the rights of women in Germany. And it could mean that there are more doctors than before who perform abortions, so that medical care becomes better and more comprehensive. Because many doctors deter abortion opponents in particular from their own practice – not the help that women come to them for.
