The Transatlantic Sun & Wind Belt

For Germany as a business location, the rapid expansion of renewable energies is critical for the future: For 70 percent of the companies planning investments in the next five years, the availability of green electricity is already a key factor in the investment decision. And the importance will continue to increase, according to 90 percent of the approximately 250 top managers surveyed in Germany. The survey was carried out by the initiative “The Transatlantic Sun & Wind Belt” together with the opinion research institute Kantar. From October to December 2022, around 250 decision-makers from international corporations and large medium-sized companies, including those from the automotive, chemical and IT industries, were surveyed.

“Without the rapid expansion of renewable energies, Germany would lose its attractiveness in international competition,” says Milan Nitzschke, co-founder of the transatlantic company initiative Sun&Wind Belt. Companies complain that regulations are still too complicated and lack the political will to implement them. Overall, the executives place Germany in the middle of the international competition for renewable energies. “In view of the rapid progress in other countries, such as the current multi-billion investment program in the USA, this assessment is likely to deteriorate even further in the near future,” Nitzschke continued. “The surprisingly positive consequence: 75 percent of the survey participants want to take the expansion into their own hands and invest in their own expansion of renewables.”

The survey also allows conclusions to be drawn about how regional attractiveness for companies is changing. In the federal states with the best conditions for the rapid expansion of renewable energies, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania occupy the top three places. From the company’s point of view, this also means the best chances of attracting investors for new locations. In contrast, there are locational disadvantages for the southern federal states.

The details of the survey can be found here here.
