In the North, two autonomous supermarkets have been installed. Cameras and weighing systems installed on the gondolas track customer purchases, which are automatically debited from their bank accounts. An innovation that nevertheless involves risks, particularly in terms of data protection.

In a supermarket in Villeneuve-d’Ascq (Nord), you identify yourself at the entrance with your credit card or a QR code to do your shopping. There are no products to scan. The bank account is automatically debited. “I will take the products I want to buy, and the system will pick them up when I go to take them thanks to the cameras on the ceiling and the weighing systems on each of the gondolas”explains Malvina Nortier, project manager at Auchan.

“We are not immune to a data leak”

On a student campus in Croix (Nord), an independent store of the genre has been operating for two years. A technology that could encourage over-consumption, and which constantly tracks our data in complete confidentiality. In each of these stores, dozens or hundreds of cameras follow our every move. What are the dangers ? “The danger is letting IT look over my shoulder. (…) We are not immune to a bug, an error, a data leak quite simply”says Damien Bancal, a journalist specializing in cybersecurity issues.
