NEW YORK.- The veteran home umpire CubanÁngel Hernández, who unsuccessfully sued Major League Baseball ( MLB) for racial discrimination, is withdrawn immediately.
During a career that spanned more than three decades, Hernandez, 62, was often scorned by players, coaches and fans for poor decision-making and quick ejections, some in high-profile situations.
Hernandez released a statement through MLB on Monday night saying he decided he wants to spend more time with his family.
“Starting with my first game in the majors in 1991, I had the great experience of realizing my childhood dream of being a major league umpire. There is nothing better than working in a profession that you like. I value the camaraderie of my colleagues and the friendships I have made along the way, including our locker room attendants in all cities,” Hernandez said.
“Needless to say, there have been many positive changes in baseball since I entered the profession. This includes the expansion and promotion of minorities. “I am proud to have been able to be an active participant in that goal while I was a Major League umpire.”
Lawsuit against MLB:
Last summer, Hernández lost a second time in his racial discrimination lawsuit against Major League Baseball, when a federal appeals court refused to reinstate his case. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld a 2021 District Court decision granting MLB summary judgment.
Hernandez filed a lawsuit in 2017. He alleged he was discriminated against because he had not been assigned to the World Series since 2005 and had not been listed as a crew chief. He served as interim crew chief from 2011 to 2016.
Born in Cuba, Hernández was hired as a Major League umpire in 1993. He worked in two World Series (2002, 2005), three All-Star Games (1999, 2009, 2017) and eight Championship Series, with his last assignment being in the LCS. . in 2016.
In Game 3 of the 2018 American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, Hernandez had three calls at first base overturned in video replay reviews.
