With an investment program worth two billion euros, the Greens in Berlin want to head for a “heat transition”. To this end, one billion euros are to flow into the conversion of the heating supply in the capital and into building renovations in the coming legislative period. The Greens’ top candidate for the re-election on February 12, Senator for Environment and Transport Bettina Jarasch, wants to present corresponding demands this Monday.

The three-page paper is available from the German Press Agency. “The heat transition is one of the biggest eco-social future issues in our city,” it says. Price increases in the energy sector also made living more expensive, “for many people these price increases are associated with severe cuts and bring them to the brink of financial stress.”

Energy costs should not become a bottomless pit, “we now have to change our energy policy and initiate the heat transition”. The Greens point out that the share of natural gas and oil heating and district heating, which is mainly fed from natural gas and hard coal, was almost 90 percent in 2019.

An investment program should enable the conversion of the heat supply. The Greens rely on heat pumps, the development of heat sources such as the use of waste heat from trade and industry, sewers, data centers or subway stations. In addition, more geothermal energy is to be used and local heating networks expanded. The training of the necessary specialists should also be promoted.

In the case of state-owned housing companies, the Greens want to speed up the energy-related refurbishment roadmap. “The goal is to bring their building stock onto the 1.5-degree path,” says the paper, referring to the international climate goals. The aim is to examine whether tenants can be specifically relieved at state level. According to the Greens, federal funding for energy efficiency measures should be supplemented with state funds.
