Katina Schubert is no longer running for chair at the state party conference of the left in mid-May. With frustration about that Failure of Red-Green-Red but that has nothing to do with it, said the 61-year-old of the German Press Agency. “I didn’t throw it down, you can’t say that after six and a half years as state chairman and four and a half years as state manager.” Eleven years at the head of the national association but it’s time for a change.

“And if you get into a situation where you have to go into opposition and you still have three and a half years until the election to reposition yourself, then that’s a good time,” said Schubert at the same time Deputy Federal President the party is. “In two years it would have gotten tight again.”

However, it was her consideration anyway to get a generational change in time. Running for the head of the state party Franziska Brychcy and Maximilian Schirmer at the party conference on May 13th and 14th in a double pack. The 38-year-old Brychcy is a member of the House of Representatives, the 32-year-old Schirmer left parliamentary group leader in the district assembly in Pankow.

“We have now understood what everyone else has done before,” said Schubert. The dual leadership exists both in other state associations and in the previous coalition partners. “There are also a lot of advantages to doing this task in pairs.”

“It could well have been that we would have postponed the change again if we had had to talk about the referendum in the red-green-red Senate,” said Schubert. “But it’s not like that now.”

We will not let this black and red government get away with anything.

The two newcomers still have enough time to familiarize themselves, to make themselves known and to grow into their leadership role, said Schubert. “You’re not born with that. The two bring a lot with them, including a lot of experience. Nevertheless, it is something different to be in the front row at the state level.”

Schubert does not intend to leave state politics completely: “I’m not going to retire,” she said. “I will certainly have more capacity now, me to get involved in the national board. And I will too,” she announced. “But I will also try to do a good job as a member of parliament. And we will not let this black-red government get away with anything either.”

The Berlin Left must House of Representatives election 2026 take a look at soon. “Of course our planning is starting now,” said Schubert. “You have all the more need from the opposition role.” It is much more difficult to set topics than from the government participation.

Schubert said of possible government partners in 2026: The left would be well advised to continue to work for progressive majorities in Berlin. “For this we work together with the city society and also with those in the SPD and Greens who want exactly that.” (dpa)
