London.- Cristian Stellini will not continue as Tottenham’s interim coach, announced the club’s president Daniel Levy.

Ryan Mason will take over the club after what Levy described as the “totally unacceptable” 6-1 thrashing of Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.

“It was devastating to watch,” Levy said Monday. “You can look at a variety of reasons for what happened and while I, the front office, the coaching staff and the players all have to take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility rests with me.”

Stellini was the assistant to former manager Antonio Conte, who left Tottenham management by mutual consent last month.

He barely managed a victory in four games in charge. The defeat against Newcastle was a blow to the aspirations of qualifying for the next Champions League.

Tottenham is six points behind fourth place, the last one that gives access to the 2023-24 Champions League. They also have two more games played than fourth Manchester United and one more than third Newcastle.

“Cristian took over at a difficult time in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and the coaching staff responded during such a difficult period,” Levy said.

“Today I met with the player committee. The squad is committed to us having the best season finale possible,” he added.
