Vice President C. Kirchner

Vice President Cristina Kirchner will reappear next Tuesday afternoon at an event to be held in Avellaneda for the inauguration of a sports center. It will be the first time that she appears in public after being sentenced to six years in prison and perpetual disqualification from holding public office in the so-called Road Cause, where she was tried for directing public works in favor of the businessman Lázaro Báez.

The host will be Mayor Jorge Ferraresi, who until recently was Alberto Fernández’s Minister of Habitat but now, like other community leaders in the suburbs, seems more devoted to explicit Christianity and far from the President’s supposed re-election claims.

Cristina had planned a sort of triumphant reappearance -with a speech included- at a meeting of the Puebla Group that was to be held in the City of Buenos Aires. It is a forum of Latin American leaders that defines itself as progressive and that supports the thesis of “lawfare” as an alleged input for the persecution of the factual powers against popular leaders. This is what the Argentine vice president who hides behind her judicial sentence, which will surely be appealed, assures: neither more nor less than political persecution.

That meeting had been thought of as a mobilizing milestone at the gates of the Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK), which was going to be the venue for the meeting, in support of the condemned leader. But it was suspended, in theory because Cristina caught Covid. It went to March. The vice president remains in the south, where she will spend Christmas.

His last public appearance was on the day of the sentence, last Tuesday the 6th: it was when he announced, as a response to the court ruling, that in 2023 his name will not be on any Frente de Todos ballot. What triggered a state of permanent assembly in Peronism.

After that discharge, in which of course he shot at the Judiciary and the media, he traveled to Punta Lara for a small meeting with his supporters. It was the night in which, in the desserts of the barbecue that the host invited, Mario Secco, asked his people to “take the marshal’s baton” and go out to military what comes next.

Days before, he had been the protagonist of a massive act at the Estadio Unico de La Plata where many believed they saw that he left the door open for a nomination. Something that, evidently, deflated with that post-conviction resignation.

In Avellaneda, next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. the excuse is the inauguration of a sports center in Villa Corina. His name will be Diego Maradona and it seems to be luxurious: several courts, a gym and other facilities that will bear the names of other sports idols. The mobilization will probably be from the local PJ, in charge of Ferraresi. That is: something of enormous dimensions is not expected.

Yesterday, Cristina used Twitter to celebrate that the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo found grandson 131 (see separate). “Enormous joy and a big hug to these women, an example of struggle and humanity,” she posted.
