Monterrey, NL. According to data from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) and the Single Window for Mexican Foreign Trade (VUCEM), Colombia customs has already exceeded the border customs of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, occupying second place behind the customs of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

Puerto Colombia registered 2,652 million pesos in collection of import taxes, while Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua collected 2,586 million pesos and Nuevo Laredo maintained the leadership of border customs with 12,715 million pesos. It is worth mentioning that Tijuana, Baja California, captured 1,206 million pesos.

In the same month of 2022, the Nuevo Leon customs office was in third place with 2,196 million pesos collected, against Ciudad Juárez, then second place with 2,588 million, and Nuevo Laredo, as leader with 12,101 million pesos.

In other words, in January 2023, in relation to the same period of the previous year, the collection of import taxes from Colombia grew 21%, while Nuevo Laredo had an increase of 5% and Juarez City remained at the same figures.

“Colombia, in Anáhuac, Nuevo León, displaces the customs office of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua from second place, concretizing a sustained growth trend registered since the start of the present administration,” said Marco González, secretary of Regional and Agricultural Development and director fee from the Corporation for the Development of the Nuevo León Border Zone (Codefront).

He indicated that the goal that the state government has set for itself is to consolidate Colombia as the fastest and safest Border Port in Mexico and the border, as the best region for international trade along the entire border with the United States.

“In addition, this growth dynamic is also verified in the total annual income of 2023 against 2022, a period in which Colombia grew 20%, Nuevo Laredo 6% and Ciudad Juárez 4%,” said the official.

All this growth in Colombia was due to the modernization of the Port promoted by the state government, but there will be much more growth,” he asserted.

“The Master Highway Plan that will unite Nuevo León from South to North, linking all Mexico-United States commerce through Nuevo León and Colombia; as well as the economic boom driven by nearshoring and the arrival of Tesla, it will trigger an escalation of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). These are the elements of an equation that will result in an exponential growth of Puerto Colombia”, said Marco González.

Consolidate union with Texas

Collection figures for Colombia, New Lionand Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, in association with Laredo, Texas, are reinforcing their consolidation as strategic allies and as the most attractive and dynamic international trade point in all of the Americas, he said.

“Speaking of Colombia and Nuevo Laredo: either we consolidate as a single development pole, both as strategic partners of Laredo, Texas, or, other border crossings could get their act together and start adopting our programs, to try to attract more crossings than us together”, warned Marco González.
