The shooting of a low-budget horror movie turns into a big mess when the team no longer distinguishes between fake and real zombies. Those who know “Don’t Cut!” », of Shin’ichirô Ueda, film of Japanese students become cult, know. For others, a tip: do not go out during the first half hour. Faithful to the spirit of the original, Michel Hazanavicius’ remake, which opened the last Cannes Film Festival, starts with a half-hour sequence shot and in a Z series tone, to go towards pure comedy as we go from embarrassed smiles to frank laughs of a hilarious last third.
Better characterized and staged than its model, with a few additions (the musician, played by Jean-Pascal Zadi) and welcome adjustments (the more assertive female characters, a little meta side), this fake making of catastrophe celebrates the collective joy of doing cinema. We put as much passion and energy into making a good or a bad film, Hazanavicius tells us through a kind of self-portrait as an out of phase maker (Romain Duris, director without ambition) reminded of his dignity by the gaze of a woman (his daughter, played by the filmmaker’s own daughter). As in “The Artist”.
