• ChatGPT should simplify writing phishing emails
  • ChatGPT democratizes code creation for ransomware
  • AI and public authorities will have a role to play

We never stop discovering the consequences of ChatGPT. This also applies to the cybersecurity sector, where the risks of malicious use are numerous. We decided to summarize in three points what the arrival of this AI changes in this area.

ChatGPT, an ideal tool for phishing?

According to a BlackBerry survey of 1,500 IT decision makers in North America, the UK and Australia, 74% of respondents expect ChatGPT to pose a potential cybersecurity threat.

More concretely, 53% believe that the ability of AI to write phishing emails is a formidable danger because it considerably simplifies the task of malicious actors. Spelling mistakes and clumsiness are forgotten, this tool is able to write short and clear texts on any subject, and this in a relatively credible way.

ChatGPT, a boon for ransomware

Also according to this BlackBerry survey, 49% of IT decision makers suggest that ChatGPT could allow less experienced hackers to improve their technical knowledge and develop more specialized skills.

In particular, this could result in an increase in the creation and distribution of ransomware. Quoted by our colleagues from TechCrunchSuleyman Ozarslan, security researcher and co-founder of Picus Security, points out: “I have no doubt that ChatGPT and other such tools will democratize cybercrime”.

He adds : “It’s bad enough that ransomware code is available for people to buy ‘off the shelf’ on the dark web; now virtually anyone can create it themselves. »

AI and governments will have a role to play

IT specialists are not remaining inactive in the face of this threat. Indeed, 82% of respondents say they plan to invest in an AI-based cybersecurity solution within the next two years, and 48% before the end of 2023.

95% of experts also call on governments to regulate these new technologies more firmly to prevent abuse. They also join the report recently made by researchers from the prestigious universities of Stanford and Georgetown and the OpenAI company who warn of the danger of ChatGPT type language model technologies.
