Essen.
The 1st of May finally falls on a weekday again – this has to be exploited. We offer event tips from the region from various genres.

A long weekend at the turn of the month – many millions of people can look forward to this for the first time in three years, since May 1st falls on a Monday. The last traditional “Dance into May” was even a year longer ago due to the corona. On April 30th, organizers lure visitors throughout the region with a variety of offers ranging from live music, large-scale parties and stage plays – we have put together a selection for you.

Mayday in Dortmund

For the traditional rave in the Westfalenhallen, organizer I-Motion is increasingly focusing on harder sounds this year. Two of the three stages, the “Factory” and the “Empire” are filled with hardstyle and gabber – in the “Arena” Amelie Lens, Dominik Eulberg, Karotte and Lilly Palmer, among others, provide electronic dance music below 160 beats per minute limit.

7-9 p.m., Westfalenhallen, Rheinlanddamm 200, Dortmund. Tickets from around €76.

Starlight Express in Bochum

The cult play holds a new world record: the final curtain fell last week for “The Phantom of the Opera” on New York’s Broadway. Now almost 35 years old, Starlight Express is the longest running musical in one location in the world. This can be celebrated on April 30th. There is a late performance at 9 p.m., followed by an after-show party with live music in the foyer of the theater from around 11:30 p.m., where Rusty, Pearl & Co. will also be present.

9 p.m., Starlight Express Theater, Stadionring 24, Bochum. Tickets from around €80.

Irish Rock in Arnsberg

Guinness is sure to flow freely here: In the Berbketalhalle in the Schreppenberg district, visitors can expect a mixture of ballads, classic Irish folk and boisterous Celtic punk. The Greenland Whalefishers from Norway, the local Muirsheen Durkin & Friends and Paddy’s Punk from Leipzig and Dessau will create a good atmosphere.

7.30 p.m., Berbketalhalle, Habichthöhe 40, Arnsberg. Tickets from €18, pre-sale points at muirsheen-durkin.de.

Rock in May in Herne

“French forks out” is the motto in the Flottmann halls. The bands Layment, Dawn Of Destiny and Grave Intentions, all from the Ruhr area, and singer Korry Shadwell entertain with heavy power and symphonic metal. After the end of the live performances, thirsty throats can be quenched in the Flottmann pub.

6 p.m., Flottmann-Hallen, Straße des Bohrhammer 5. Herne. Tickets around €23.

Solidarity fund hit party in Castrop-Rauxel

Mood music for a good cause: the proceeds from the benefit event are intended for the educational and social projects for disadvantaged children and young people of the Solidarity Fund Foundation NRW. Genre greats like Michelle, Mickie Krause, Anna-Maria Zimmermann, Michael Holm and Olaf Henning entertain for six hours, plus there are a few 90s hits by Oli.P.

7 p.m. to 1 a.m., Europahalle, Europaplatz 6-10, Castrop-Rauxel. Tickets around €47.

Dance into May in Oberhausen

And more hits: The Heidekrug party bar in the Alstaden district also invites you to have a good time. Michael Fischer, Jasmin Herren, known from the RTL jungle camp, and Steffen Jürgens, among others, ensure rhythmic clapping and swooshing in the audience.

6 p.m., party pub Heidekrug, Luisenstr. 60, Oberhausen. Tickets around €24.

Early Bird Festival in Duisburg

The organizers of the “Early Bird” in the Villa Rheinperle advertise with the slogan “The first festival of the year”. Fans of electronic dance music who find the Mayday program (see above) too hard are served for twelve hours. Disturbed but horny, Younotus, The Disco Boys, Moguai and Plastik Funk serve the DJ decks and play mostly melodic house and EDM.

3 p.m.-3 a.m., Villa Rheinperle, Villenstr. 2, Duisburg. Tickets from around €28.

Dance into May in Kalkar

In Wonderland, the dance into May begins on April 29th. DJ Dominic Vogt and entertainer Andreas Solisko, accompanied by a singer, entertain in various bars on the Pub Street of the leisure center with hits from pop, rock, dance and hits. The following evening, Solisko is allowed to play again – but then alone on stage.

Always at 9 p.m., Wunderland, Griether Str. 110-120, Kalkar. Tickets around €30.

Dance into May in Dortmund

In the night from April 30th to May 1st, the Domicil serves completely different musical tastes.
