What does the flag carried by Nemo, the first non-binary person to win Eurovision with The Code, mean?

Switzerland has swept the voting for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. During the event, Nemo, who performed The Code at the Malm Arena in Sweden, showed a protesting four-color flag.

What is a non-binary flag? Who does it represent?

After each of the many votes in which the Swiss delegation took the 12 points from the jury, we were able to see Nemo waving a flag with yellow, white, purple and black horizontal stripes. While we have become more familiar with the rainbow flag, which represents the entire LGBT community, Nemo had another pride flag in his possession, which represented the non-binary community.

Non-binary people, for those who don’t know, are people who do not identify exclusively as male or female. They may identify as men and women, somewhere in between or completely outside of those categories.

What do the colors of the flag represent?

The creation of this flag dates back to the year 2014. The yellow stripe represents people who identify outside of the binary man or woman, the white refers to people of various genders, the purple is for those who identify as a mix of man and woman, while the black represents people who feel like they have no gender.

In November 2023, Nemo declared himself non-binary in an interview with the Swiss media SonntagsZeitung and expressed his preference to be referred to as they/them in English and to use his first name instead of pronouns in German.
