Daniel Sancho case: the Koh Samui provincial court turns its back on Edwin Arrieta's family

There are just five days left until the long-awaited trial of Daniel Sancho begins, in which he will be tried for the murder and dismemberment of the Colombian surgeon, Edwin Arrieta. The hearing will begin next April 9 and will last until May 3. The Spaniard remains in provisional prison since last August waiting to hear the sentence of the Thai justice system, which could be a life sentence or, in the worst case, the death penalty.

The trial will have a total of 57 witnesses, among whom will not be the victim’s parents, as published by Infobae. The provincial court of Koh Samui has decided to separate them, considering that they are too old to face the long hours of flight that separate Colombia and Thailand. In addition, they specify that the Arrieta family does not have sufficient technical means, although without going into details.

Although Leobaldo Arrieta and Marcela Arteaga were going to testify via videoconference, the Thai Court has denied this situation in the first instance. Nevertheless, They will be able to provide documentation to dismantle Daniel Sancho’s defense or other people from the Colombian surgeon’s family testify in his place.

Juan Gonzalo Ospina, lawyer for the victim’s family, assured in statements to La Razn that they will not be the ones requesting the maximum penalty, although they do hope that justice will be done. We will adjust to what the prosecutor asks for. No one knows the Thai criminal code more than the Thai prosecutor’s office. If the death penalty is requested, we adhere, although I do not believe it would be applied because it has not been done for years.acknowledged the jurist.

Daniel Sancho, calm

Marcos García Montes, the prestigious lawyer who leads Daniel Sancho’s defense from Spain, recently revealed on the program Let’s see how his client is doing in the final stretch of the case: His father, Rodolfo Sancho, just told me that he is calm.

The jurist, who already has his strategy ready to avoid capital punishment by all means, has prepared a sixty-page report that addresses all of the the evidence that exists against the young cook in order to challenge it: In the reconstruction of the events there was no prosecutor, there was no judge, there was no lawyer (…) The date of death and its cause are impossible. The evidence has to be carried out legally, and a reconstruction of facts without a lawyer, without a judge, and without a prosecutor is not valid, he added.
