The Minister of the Interior answered questions from the Sunday newspaper in an interview posted online this Saturday evening. In the context of the accident caused by Pierre Palmade after consuming cocaine, Gérald Darmanin proposed several ways to fight against driving under the influence of narcotics.

The shock following the accident caused on February 10 in Seine-et-Marne by Pierre Palmade, then under the influence of narcotics, could have political and legal consequences. Indeed, questioned in this context by the Sunday newspaper during an interview posted online this Saturday evening, the Minister of the Interior made several proposals aimed at punishing drivers convicted after driving under the influence of drugs more harshly.

Gérald Darmanin mentioned various possibilities, ranging from the automatic withdrawal of permits to the creation of the judicial chief of “road homicide”.

A preliminary medical examination before getting back behind the wheel

“I propose the withdrawal of the 12 points from the driving license for anyone who drives while using drugs”, first stated Gérald Darmanin who continued by saying that he was thinking “also (to) return obligatory a medical examination of any proven drug user so that he is authorized to drive if he is treated. it should indeed be noted that for the time being the withdrawal of the permit is not automatic, as specified in the JDDonly in case of recurrence.

The Minister of the Interior also stressed that he was considering – in concert with the Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti – “to rename fatal accidents caused by drugs and alcohol as ‘road homicides'”. “We have been working on it since last December, on the proposal of the associations,” he assured.
