After the tragic death in Vienna, the last generation defends itself against the accusations of obstructing rescue workers. VOL.AT spoke to Marina Hagen-Canaval (XR Vorarlberg).

“People of the last generation are being accused of refusing to give way to an emergency vehicle – that’s not true. As with each of our protests, there was no one taped to one lane ready to open immediately in an emergency. There was no sign of one If necessary. There has never been a request from the police, from passers-by and/or drivers, to let an ambulance through.”

“A camera team from oe24 followed the protest from start to finish, and the footage from start to finish shows or hears neither such a request nor an ambulance stuck in a traffic jam. We cannot explain why the Authorities claim this despite clear evidence and call on you to stick to the facts,” says the statement of the last generation on the incident at the Vienna distribution group.

Hagen-Canaval responds to the serious allegations

“We have deliberately decided to make a statement now that all the facts have been clarified. It is frightening that such a tragic death is now being used to agitate against us and our actions,” says climate activist Marina Hagen-Canaval on VOL.AT -Request out.

Especially since the last generation or Extinction Rebellion would coordinate with the blue light organizations and the authorities in the run-up to a protest in order to coordinate emergency scenarios or rescue routes.

Last generation: Here the
further comment in detail

“We would like to clarify these facts: The protest primarily affected traffic coming from the south, while the ambulance was traveling in the opposite direction. A turning lane was left open from the start, allowing vehicles to exit the roundabout. Over one bus lane and one sufficient Emergency vehicles were able to cross the roundabout unhindered in a north-south direction on the wide cycle path. The deceased – our sympathy goes to the relatives – was treated on site by an emergency helicopter and was declared dead before the protest began.”

“Our protests are disrupting the everyday life of many people and we are sorry for the disruption. We would like to stop this immediately. As soon as the government presents a plan for how we can survive together, we will stop our protests with immediate effect. We call on the government to work out measures with which the climate goals we have set ourselves and, last but not least, the international agreements that Austria has entered into can be met. The first, simplest steps towards achieving this could be a speed limit of 100 km/h on motorways and a ban on all new oil and gas drilling. “

“To exploit deaths is downright grotesque”

“It is downright grotesque to instrumentalize deaths that are not attributable to our protest actions, even though we are fighting for all of our lives. Because we take to the streets to save human lives. From the consequences of climate change such as drought, famine , crop failures or heat waves that will definitely cost lives if we don’t act now,” concludes the Vorarlberg spokeswoman for climate protection.
