Mexico City.- The draft decree that seeks to eliminate cargo operations at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) would benefit North American companies.

This would happen because national airlines like Estafeta, for example, when changing airports would not be able to operate their flights to the US, since that would be considered a new route and air degradation prohibits it, specialists warned.

“Air degradation does not allow the opening of new routes and the measure could not be possible for national companies until they return to Category 1. This would benefit North American companies as has happened in passenger transport,” said Rogelio Rodríguez, an air analyst .

The National Aerotransport Chamber (Canaero), requested that the term to change be one year and not three months as the Government intends.

Carlos Torres, an expert in air issues, that the measure will not solve the saturation of the AICM, since only 3 percent of the slots would be eliminated (30 or 32 operations per day).

National and international airlines operate in the AICM dedicated to offering cargo services such as:

– Post office

– More

-UPS

– Aerounion

-Cargolux

-Lufthansa Cargo

-Cathay Pacific

-Atlas Air

“In reality it will not be a measure that in practice will substantially improve the operation of the AICM,” agreed Torres.

He recalled that in terms of total cargo volume, it is important to consider that the AICM is the national airport that handles the largest cargo volume.

“Of the total that is transferred annually, 75 percent corresponds to cargo that goes to or comes from abroad, and the rest is the national market,” he explained.
