This Friday afternoon an eexplosion that started a fire in the oil complex Deer Parkwhere a Petróleos Mexicanos plant is also located (Pemex). The incident that occurred around 3 pm -Central Mexico time- left at least two people injured, according to local media reports.

Although it was preliminarily reported that it was the Pemex facilities where the accident occurred, the international agency Reuters detailed that the fire broke out at the plant of the petrochemical company Shell.



Likewise, Petróleos Mexicanos later reported that, indeed, the fire broke out in the Shell area, however it noted that the ePemex emergency response teams provided support due to the fact that the facilities of both oil companies are adjacent.

It is worth mentioning that so far in 2023, this is the third fire to occur in Deer Park; the first broke out on February 24 on Pemex property; Likewise, on March 14, the Mexican state oil company reported a second fire.

The incident quickly went viral through social networks, since different videos began to circulate that showed a thick column of smoke from the industrial zone located in the city of Houston, Texas. However, the competent authorities reacted immediately.

Hours before the incident, Pemex announced that it had had its best refining figure in nine years since it produced 1.1 million barrels of oil per day during the first quarter of 2023. This, thanks to the contribution of the Deer Park complex.

Since January of last year, the government announced the purchase of a refinery in the oil complex, with which it planned to add contributions to the production of crude oil to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
