New York, May 9 (EFE).- Republican congressman George Santos, who concocted a whole series of lies to promote his political career, has been denounced by federal prosecutors and must appear tomorrow in a New York court, CNN said. .
There is still no official confirmation of the accusations, which are sealed until tomorrow, and Santos -the first openly gay Republican congressman- has not ruled on the matter.
Everything seems to indicate that the accusations have to do with the veracity of his political campaign and the funds he obtained thanks to his inventions, since according to CNN the prosecutors have mainly investigated his alleged false testimonies related to the financing of his campaign.
During his brief tenure in Washington of just a few months, Santos has come under great pressure from the media and from his Democratic opponents, and even from his co-religionists in his New York county of Nassau, but the leadership of the Republican Party has not yet disavowed him.
Santos has admitted to having inflated or manipulated part of his biography -such as his family origins or his studies-, but without acknowledging the thornier issues related to the collection of funds for his political campaign.
