Mexico City .- The Chamber of Deputies will no longer endorse the federal executive’s proposal to transfer the SEP’s Directorate General of Indigenous, Intercultural and Bilingual Education to the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples.

After pressure from the National Coordination of Education Workers and the fact that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reversed his proposal, the coordinator of the Morena deputies, Ignacio Mier, said that said reform is cancelled.

“Today I am going to meet with them (the teachers), I already have a clear position; the president shares it and we are going to suggest to the teachers and the Commission that this not be ruled in those terms, that it stay as it is (the law),” declared Mier at the San Lázaro campus.

Last April, the Federal executive proposed to the Chamber of Deputies to disappear the Executive Secretariat of the National Anti-Corruption System and to merge deconcentrated and decentralized bodies, as well as administrative units, including the Directorate of Bilingual Education.

A month after López Obrador presented the initiative, Mier said that he does not agree with said reform and is the executive who shares his vision.

He added that Morena is an ally of the teachers and that other administrations have wanted to affect bilingual education.

“I do not share that opinion, the president also said it,” he said.

He announced that when the reform is reviewed, he will request that the issue of said direction not be included in the opinion.

“We are going to do a complete review of the initiative, we are going to set up a work table, but starting in principle that this great concern, the substantive let’s say that the Directorate of Attention to the Indigenous Population in educational matters be changed to remain where it is,” he explained.

– So if a modification would be made to the initiative?, he was asked.

“Yes, it would be a modification for that. Let’s see if the Court doesn’t get angry,” he replied.

-And they already agreed on it with the president?, he was insisted.

“The president today expressed his point of view, we must not forget that the president was born in professional public life in an Institute, in a direction of the National Indigenous Institute. So, he knows that part well and it was at that stage of our country , in terms of the Instrumentation of Government Policy, then, he is very clear, very clear,” added Mier.
