DeSantis blames Biden for presence of Russian flotilla so close to Florida coast

The governor Ron DeSantis He stated that President Joe Biden’s “posture of weakness” is responsible for the arrival of a flotilla of the Russian Navy -which includes a nuclear-powered submarine- to the port of Havana.

In a press conference on Friday, the governor of Florida described the Russian presence in Cuban waters as “worrying” and “problematic”, and assured that he would not allow it.

“We are failing as a country with deterrence capabilities and I think it starts at the top with the president of the United States,” he lamented.

“I think history has shown that these bad actors respond to force and are deterred by force. They are not going to be deterred by weakness. They are not going to be deterred by confusion,” he said.

DeSantis finished off his opinion on the subject with a direct attack on Biden: “You are not going to be deterred by a president wandering aimlessly around the G7,” alluding to the images of the Democratic president at the Group of Seven Summit held this week in Italy.

On Wednesday, June 12, a Russian naval detachment arrived in Cuba made up of the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker (SB-131), the fleet oil tanker Pashin and the frigate Almirante Gorshkov.

According to The New Heralda federal official told McClatchy Publishing and the Herald/Times that the Russian flotilla, on its approach to Havana, passed less than 30 nautical miles from Key Largo on Tuesday, within international waters, but getting unusually close to the coasts of the United States.

The US Department of Defense assured that the Russian warships in Cuban waters do not represent a direct threat to the United Statesand that the visit is part of routine Russian military exercises.

However, hours before the arrival of the flotilla in Havana, the government of The United States deployed several warships (two destroyers and a Coast Guard) and an underwater reconnaissance plane to track the flotilla’s course.

According to the report of The New Heraldofficials told McClatchy that they never lost track of the submarine on its journey to Cuba before it surfaced in Havana Harbor.

In the same position as DeSantis, the Cuban-American senator Marco Rubio asked President Biden not to sit idly byand recalled that there has not been a Russian submarine with nuclear-capable missiles operating in the Caribbean for more than 30 years.
