Yesterday, at the awards ceremony of the 38th DOK.fest Munich, the DOK.fest Prize of the SOS Children’s Villages worldwide was presented Julia Amati awarded: The French-Italian director and producer is awarded for her film KRISTOS, THE LAST CHILD. For a year she accompanied the then ten-year-old Kristos, the son of a shepherd and the youngest of the 30 residents of the Greek island of Arki – and the only primary school child. In his final year at school, the boy faces a crucial decision: should he leave his island and go to a distant boarding school, as recommended by his teacher, who sees great potential in him? Or should he become a shepherd like his father and his brothers?

Prizewinner Giulia Amati:

“I am very proud to receive this award, which of course I dedicate to Kristos. It was wonderful to work with him and to try to understand the world through his eyes. What does it mean to grow up in a world where there There are only adults and no other children to play with? What does it mean to have to decide at the age of only eleven whether to leave your family to attend compulsory education? Kristos’ challenge is a universal one. For me it stands the sea that surrounds the island, symbolic of the limit of our living environment, but also of a limit that each of us knows about ourselves: our fears. Often they stand in our way, but sometimes we manage to overcome them overcome to discover something new. But it takes courage. I think Kristos’ courage, his smile, his tears and his confidence is an inspiration to all of us.”

Franco-Italian laureate Giulia Amati is a writer, director and producer. She studied philosophy at La Sapienza University in Rome and digital video production at New York University. KRISTOS, THE LAST CHILD is her third feature film after “This is my Land … Hebron” (IT 2010) and “Shashamane” (IT/GB 2016). Her projects have received numerous awards.
