Former United States President Donald Trump announced this Sunday that he intends to request the recusal of the judge from his future trial in Washington, accused of reversing the 2020 presidential election and favored the assault on the Capitol in 2021.

«There is no way I can benefit from a fair trial with the judge ‘assigned’ to this ridiculous case. of freedom of expression and fair elections”, Trump thundered, as usual in capital letters, on his Truth Social social network.

Why did Trump call for the recusal?

«Everybody knows it, she got it. We are going to immediately request that this judge be recused, with very solid grounds, and also a change of setting (of the trial) outside of (Washington) DC,” added the former president, in relation to federal magistrate Tanya Chutkan and the Federal Court from the American capital.

Chutkan, who will preside over the case that will earn Trump his third – and most serious – criminal charge, is known for harshly condemning supporters of the ex-president who participated on January 6, 2021 in the capture of the Capitol.

The magistrate was randomly assigned to oversee this landmark court case involving Trump, indicted on August 1 for conspiring against the State in connection with his attempts to reverse the result of the November 2020 election.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, a key figure in the case, said this Sunday that he would not object to testifying against Trump.

“I have no plans to testify,” Pence initially told CNN. «But, look… we will always comply with the law“, said the 64-year-old politician, who is now competing against his former boss for the Republican presidential nomination.

On the eve of the joint session of Congress on January 6, 2021, Trump asked Pence to use his position to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

When Pence refused to do so, Trump tweeted that his vice president was “worthless.”

John Lauro, a member of Trump’s legal team, argued Sunday that Trump’s requests were not orders and therefore they were legal under the free speech clauses of the Constitution. Trump traveled to Washington on August 3 to plead not guilty to the four charges against him.
