Anyone would think that Dragon Ball Super, Chainsaw Man y One Piece they would be at the top of the manga sales charts for all of last year 2022. But the disconcerting and unexpected reality is that actually today the top king of that printed format is neither more nor less than Jujutsu Kaisen.
A company, under the name of Oricon, has just finally published its official count with the most popular manga throughout the 12 months that made up the previous year and we find some surprising and unexpected titles. At least for Western and Latin American readers.
Since anyone would consider that the same madness is experienced in their country of origin as here on this side of the planet for franchises like Dragon Ball Super, One Piece or Chainsaw Man. But the reality is that everything would be much more different than expected.
Today we bring you some very interesting quantitative data that would give us an interesting perspective on the contrasts between the trends and tastes of the Japanese and Latin markets.
Neither Dragon Ball nor Chainsaw Man: Jujutsu Kaisen is the most famous manga in Japan
The ranking of the best-selling manga in Japan in 2022 has just been revealed according to data from the Oricon rating service (via SportsKeeda), where Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen would be the most successful manga in all of Japan over the past year, surpassing popular series like Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Super with Toyotaro, and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man.
Akutami’s work would have a total of 12 million 282 thousand units sold only in Japan, a sufficient figure to position itself at the top of a list that we could affirm is relatively competitive:
Tokyo Revengers is the second best-selling manga, with an estimated total of 11 million copies. It is an action-drama manga that tells the story of Takemichi Hanagaki, a young man who travels back in time to save his ex-girlfriend from a criminal gang. The manga has 24 published volumes and an anime adaptation produced by Liden Films.
Spy x Family is in third place with 10.6 million copies. It is a comedy and espionage work that follows the adventures of a false family made up of a spy, a murderer and a girl with telepathic powers.
One Piece, to the surprise of many, is the fourth best-selling manga in the country, with an estimated total of 10.3 million copies. It already accumulates more than 1,000 chapters and 101 published volumes.
My Hero Academia is the fifth best seller, with an estimated total of 5.3 million copies. To date, it has 33 published volumes and an anime adaptation produced by Bones.

Jujutsu Kaisen for its part is a dark fantasy manga that tells the adventures of Yuji Itadori, a student who joins a wizarding school to fight evil spirits. The manga has 18 published volumes and an anime adaptation produced by MAPPA. Here the complete list:
