Elder Abuse Event in Queens

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an event is being held this Monday in Queens that seeks to empower and combat abuse against adults who belong to that community.

Organized by the Department for the Elderly, This day of action aims to raise awareness and generate solid support for this group of society.

It includes a community walk along Queens Boulevard, with New Yorkers dressed in purple, and a resource and support fair at the Sunnyside Senior Center.

There, experts, community leaders and elected officials talk about this problem and the programs designed to combat it.

With the theme “Building Strong Supports for Seniors,” the event emphasizes the importance of creating a strong support network for older adults who are victims of abuse.

Elder abuse is a global problem. In the United States, an estimated 1 in 10 adults over the age of 60 living at home were abused in the past year alone, but only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse are reported or received the necessary assistance.
