The year 2023 starts strong for Tesla! With its lower prices, the firm of Elon Musk has chosen to boost its sales to maintain its lead over Chinese manufacturers. But this decision creates several problems…

Tesla wants to put its electric cars back in the spotlight in 2023

Tesla knows it, 2023 will be a pivotal year for the electric car market. And if Elon Musk’s company wants to be like previous years, it’s going to have to redouble efforts to hold back Chinese manufacturers who threaten its “hegemony”. And to do this, the American firm launched a price war a few weeks ago. As a symbol, the first price drop recorded on the brand’s models took place in China, before spreading all over Europe – and therefore in France.

Therefore on January 13, the prices of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y dropped significantly. To tell you, the propulsion version of each of the two models now benefits from the ecological bonus of €5,000. Thanks to the latter, it is now possible to obtain a Model 3 for €39,990 and a Model Y for €41,990. And as you can imagine, it didn’t take long for orders to come in, which puts pressure on factories, especially the Berlin gigafactory.

Just-in-time Tesla factories?

Tesla has Superchargers, but they also have Gigafactories. The Berlin site is also the one that produces the majority of the brand’s electric cars (in Europe), although it is not yet fully operational. At the end of 2022, the German factory had begun to find its cruising speed and was pleased to assemble 3,000 Model Ys in a week. But now, the recent drop in prices and the increase in orders, has a direct impact on the Berlin factory.

Another problem, recruitments. It’s a secret to no one, but Tesla is struggling to recruit because of the competition present across the Rhine, which pays its workers better. We can cite in particular Audi, Mercedes or even BMW which owns several factories in Germany and which offers its employees more attractive salaries than those offered by Tesla. To make matters worse, the employees of Elon Musk present on the Berlin lands, complain of the long working days they face – sometimes even on weekends. Today they are 9,000 and Tesla would like to push their number to 12,000.

End to end, recruitment problems and the consequences of rising prices therefore have a considerable impact on the delivery times of the brand’s vehicles. For the moment, the French site of Tesla indicates deliveries for February/March with regard to the Model 3 and the Model Y. The delays are not yet too significant, but could become so if the orders continue to flow.
