Mexico City.- After acknowledging that the country’s corn and wheat producers face an economic problem, the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union approved a pronouncement to request the establishment of an emerging rescue plan for the commercialization of both grains that includes guaranteed prices.

The four-point warrant demands that the guarantee price be established at 7,000 and 8,000 pesos, respectively, throughout Mexico and that the purchase limit for these grains be extended for Mexican producers.

It also requests the design and execution of an emerging marketing rescue plan, with the aim of reducing the negative impact of current market conditions, as well as the establishment of a marketing base price for the benefit of producers of Sinaloa, Sonora and the Valley of Mexicali, in Baja California.

The document indicates that the Permanent Commission is no stranger to the economic problems faced by corn and wheat producers throughout the national territory.

“(The Permanent Commission) supports the request that a fair price be guaranteed for the production of said grains based on the productive and market needs experienced by national producers, providing co-responsible support to producers to establish a guarantee price based on marketing that allow them to cover their production costs and achieve a reasonable profit margin”.

On March 31, representatives of producers asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for support in the face of the high production costs of grains such as corn and wheat.

“In all our history as producers we have never had such high costs in all the links of the production process,” they stated in a letter sent to the federal president.

In addition, on April 3, the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA) indicated that in the midst of the dispute over transgenic corn between Mexico and the United States, the national production of said grain during the first two months of 2023 registered an annual drop. of 18 percent, which placed it in the lowest volume since 2014 for an equal period.

The pronouncement recognizes that corn is one of the most important crops in Mexico, which is why it has been part of the Mexican diet and culture, as well as the main source of food for the country’s population.

“There is a need to create a rescue plan for the countryside, based on boosting national production to reduce dependence on basic grains (corn, beans, rice and bread wheat) through the implementation of guaranteed prices, the supply of fertilizers, in addition to greater investments in infrastructure, the provision of technical assistance and the adoption of agroecological practices,” he reiterates.
