Last April they were created in Spain 238,436 jobs, which leaves the largest number of people affiliated to Social Security in the historical series and the highest increase in absolute terms of employment for a fourth month of the year, of 1.17% per month. In addition, unemployment fell by 73,890 people2.58% per month, with a strong boost from the hospitality industry and tourism derived from Holy Week.
According to the data published this Thursday by the Ministries of Social Security and Labor, the total number of affiliates amounts to 20,614,989 and the unemployed to 2,788,370the lowest number for a month of April since 2008. This represents an annual increase in enrollment of 2.98% and a decrease in unemployment of 7.75% compared to April 2022.
By sectors, only the one of the services account for the creation of 208,302 jobs, 87% of the total. April has coincided this year with the celebration of Easter, which further boosts employment, although repeatedly the fourth month of the year usually registers good data due to the start of the tourist season in many parts of the country.
In percentage terms, the sector of the agriculture, livestock and fishing grows somewhat more than that of services (1.58% compared to 1.34%) and gains 16,776 affiliates after three months of decline. This is cyclical behavior as a result of the start of some fruit and vegetable campaigns, since the picture is not so optimistic when compared to April of previous years: it is the lowest number of affiliates in the historical series for a month of April since 2008.
This is due, in part, to the progressive technification of the field, but also to a pronounced drought which reduces harvests and causes surplus labor. After these two sectors, the industry gains 7,965 affiliates, 0.34% more per month, and the construction 5,394 (0.39%).
Employment of youth and women grows more than average this month of the labor market as a whole. According to Social Security data, all age groups between 16 and 29 years They have higher than average percentage increases compared to the previous month, highlighting 6.87% of people between 16 and 19 years of age. In interannual terms, it is also this group of young people that grows the most in affiliation (18.80%), followed by people between 20 and 24 years old (8.74%).
As for the women, the rise in their average affiliation in April 2023 was 1.34% compared to the previous month compared to 1.02% for men. The same happens in annual terms, with a 3.36% variation compared to 2.64% for men.
If we analyze the unemployment data, the monthly drop in unemployment among young people under 25 triples the national average, since it is 9.23%, 19,848 fewer people, compared to 2.58% on average. However, the decrease in unemployment among women is somewhat lower in percentage terms than that of men, 2.26% (38,756 fewer stops) compared to 3.07% for men.
