MANCHESTER.- The defender Harry Maguire and the attacker Jack Grealish were the big omissions in the final list of 26 players that the coach of England, Gareth Southgate, presented on Thursday for the Euro Cup.
James Maddison, Tottenham’s creative midfielder, was also left out. Despite a season in which he was hampered by injuries, defender Luke Shaw (Manchester United) was included in the squad for the tournament that will start in Germany on June 14.
Maguire missed the end of the season with Manchester United after suffering a calf injury last month.
“I am devastated after not having been selected to represent England in the Euros this summer,” said the center back in a message on X, the former Twitter. “Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to recover from my calf injury. Maybe I pushed myself too hard to be able to get into the call. “I’m just devastated.”
Although an injury ruined Maguire’s hopes of going to a third consecutive major international tournament, Grealish paid the price for a faded season with Premier League champion Manchester City. He only scored three goals in the campaign.
Southgate purged his preliminary list of 33 players, one that had already left out other renowned pieces such as Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Mason Mount
The Three Lions still have a warm-up match planned before the start of the Euros. They will face Iceland at Wembley Stadium in London on Friday.
England will debut against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16. They will also play against Denmark and Slovenia in Group C.
