Enjoy Great Kills Park on Staten Island

Great Kills Park is a public space located in the Great Kills section of the same name, in the county of Staten Island.

Originally called Marine Park, it is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area on the island.

The site is managed by the National Park Service, covers an area of approximately 580 acres (just over two square kilometers) and contains marshes, beaches and forests that visitors can walk along two miles of Staten Island’s southern shore.

It also offers a port and sports fields, trails, fishing and bird watching areas.

Remember that to get to Staten Island using public transportation you can take the island’s iconic ferry service.

The ferry is completely free and connects the White Hall station in Lower Manhattan with the Saint George station in Staten Island.

The park’s main entrance is at Hylan Boulevard and Buffalo Street, where you’ll also find a bus stop.

Near the main entrance is the Staten Island Railroad’s Bay Terrace station. And if you have a boat, you can arrange access at Nichols Marina, at the Great Kills Pier.

Great Kills Park is also known for its four beaches. These are: New Dorp Beach, Cedar Grove, Oakwood and Fox Beach.

New Dorp Beach has great historical significance as it was home to the second permanent European settlement on Staten Island. Today, these beaches and wetlands help fight erosion and flooding.

Please note that during the beach season, lifeguards are present every day from 10am to 6pm. Swimming is prohibited when there are no lifeguards on duty and in closed areas.
