The Minister of Justice assures that “1500 more magistrates, 1500 more clerks, many contract workers and prison staff” will be hired to fulfill this objective.
Clear goals. Invited this Sunday noon by BFM Politique, the Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti returned in more detail to his action plan for justice, the announcements of which “are the result of a long reflection.” According to him, the measures adopted since are “consensual.” The Minister of Justice confirmed his “wish” to see “the length of proceedings be halved in time by the end of the five-year term.”
To fulfill this objective, the minister underlines that “1500 more magistrates, 1500 more clerks, many contract workers and prison staff”, were going to be hired. As far as magistrates are concerned, the 31-month training which concerns them is not an obstacle.
“Allow other professions to become magistrates”
“The next two promotions of the National School of the Judiciary, it is an increase of more than 81% of the auditors of justice. Today there are seven ways of access to be a magistrate, we will simplify to allow d other professions to become magistrates, including lawyers”, he explains.
The Keeper of the Seals also recalled the wish of Emmanuel Macron and the government to “rewrite, simplify” the Code of Criminal Procedure, showing the difference in thickness between the 1959 and 2003 version.
15,000 additional prison places
Regarding the prison, Éric Dupond-Moretti recalled that 15,000 “net” places were going to be built. “In 2023, I’m inaugurating ten establishments that have come out of the ground. In 2024, half of the program will be operational, for the rest the construction sites are already underway”, he recalls, stressing that a renovation program was also in progress in France.
By way of conclusion, the Keeper of the Seals also slipped a tackle on certain elected officials who in recent years have refused the construction of penitentiary centers in their municipality or constituency.
“There are elected officials who want security, but who don’t want to give the land. And there are Republicans, who understand how important it is, and who give the land to the ministry.”
