The deputies voted the obligation, for the town halls of municipalities of more than 1500 inhabitants, to display the French and European flags on the pediment of the town halls. All town halls will also have to display the portrait of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron.

By 130 votes in favor and 109 against, the National Assembly adopted this Wednesday evening, after long hours of debate in a tense atmosphere, the Renaissance group’s bill aimed at making it compulsory to display the French and European flags. on the pediment of town halls.

The bill, last week, was rejected in committee. In the hemicycle on Wednesday, she was once again criticized by opposition deputies, from right and left.

The text has been modified: an amendment from the socialist group, sub-amended by Renaissance, reduced the scope of the bill, excluding small towns with fewer than 1,500 inhabitants. They will therefore not be required, if the bill is voted identically one day by the Senate and then promulgated, to display the European flag on their facades.

The portrait of Macron compulsory in all town halls

Under the proposal of Renaissance deputy Denis Masséglia, an amendment was voted to make it compulsory, in all town halls, to display the portrait of the President of the Republic. A measure that angered many opposition MPs.
