It should start in 2023: the 49-euro ticket. That was a good reason to ask in December 2022 what the approval or rather willingness to use is like among our readers. It certainly depends heavily on whether frequent commuting is already popular at the moment. Because the 49-euro ticket can possibly save you money.

On the other hand, if you mostly work from home and commute to work on foot, by bike or by car, 49 euros is probably still too much for a monthly ticket, even if it is then valid nationwide. Some readers may have already had this experience with the significantly cheaper 9-euro ticket: In the end, it was used less than initially assumed because there was simply not enough time and opportunities.

Ultimately, it will certainly be exciting to see how the 49-euro ticket is accepted by the masses. Since the price is significantly higher than the 9-euro ticket, there are no empirical values. This is exactly why the discussions between the federal government, the federal states and transport companies have been going on for so long and the exact start is still not certain. I myself will only buy the ticket irregularly because I work most of the time in my home office and it is therefore not profitable for me in the long run.

I live in Hamburg myself, where there are at least enough buses, S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains as well as regional trains. If you live in the country, you might even like to use the 49-euro ticket, but in the end you don’t have enough options. If you consider the unreliability of the railways, which has grown in 2022, then some people will certainly think twice about actually taking the train to important dates.

But let’s get to the concrete results of our survey: A total of 4,119 readers voted – thank you for taking part. The specific question was “Will you use the 49-euro ticket in 2023?” Most of the votes went to the simple answer: “No” (1,806 votes, 44%). However, 11% (439 votes) are still unsure. If we add up the “yes” votes, however, they are just for the majority – 45% or 1,861 votes. However, only 30%, 1,237 votes, account for the option of wanting to use the 49-euro ticket regularly.

15%, i.e. 637 voters, state that they want to use the ticket but expect it to be used irregularly. Then it will probably be used more for vacation trips or something like that. Did you expect the results in this form?
